Jacqui lambie wants social housing support for tax cut vote?
Updated
Former prime minister Julia Gillard says the public vote to end the Gonski education program was a victory for Australian f???????amilies.
The program — widely derided by some as an attack on students — was funded through tax cuts introduced by former prime minister Tony Abbott.
But Ms Gillard says the current Liberal government does not want a “one-size-fits-all approach” to its education system.
“The Gonski is not one size fits all, it’s not something that is being put together simply from the tax revenue,” Ms Gillard told ABC TV’s Lateline.
“The money that you are spending now will come back later if you have a sustainable budget,” she said.
“The other part of that… is hav??????ing a more flexible approach about funding that education — it’s not always a priority for government, but it is a priority.”
Ms Gillard says the new government will move away from the current funding formula.
“We are going to look at a different funding model,” she said.
“We have to look at the best deal for Australia, for students, for families, and we are going to work out ways to bring the best out of both the government’s approach and the community’s approach.”
Ms Gillard is facing calls from Labor and the Greens to end the program.
But she says Australia needs more services and says the Gonski is not a “social welfare program” and was not designed to support low-income families.
